APPLIED MATERIALS
From R&D to Comprehensive Business Operations

" The Israeli unit is an inseparable part of the company and enables us to provide the technological advantage that differentiates us from our competitors and enables us to expand our market share" Michael R. Splinter, President and CEO of Applied Materials

Applied Materials in Israel develops and produces equipment -- from cell phones to personal computers and from game consuls to LCD televisions --used by leading multinationals in the manufacturing process of consumer electronic devices. Applied Materials' PDC Group in Israel is the company's largest stand-alone profit center outside the U.S. and is the only international site that carries out the entire business process, from research and development to manufacturing and marketing . In contrast to the Israeli operations of many other multinationals, Applied Materials is engaged in both R&D and production in Israel.

Highlights

  • Starting with 100 employees, Applied Materials Israel now has 1,000, many  most of whom are leading scientists and engineers in the fields of physics, electro-optics, algorithms, electro microscopy and mechanics.
  • Applied Materials in Israel has greatly contributed to the company's overall global operations, through developing the various technologies including:
  • The award-winning UVision, the industry's first Laser 3D Brightfield Inspection Tool, which is widely used by the industry and is installed in the products of most of the leading chip manufacturers.
  • The award-winning SEMVision G2 FIB – the world's first integrated focused ion beam used for defect analysis, detection and correction.
  • VerSEM 3D – the first CD-SEM system with 3D imaging and measurement capability which allows chipmakers to reduce costs quickly and efficiently through the early on-line detection of process excursions.
  • Applied Materials Israel is responsible for the development of computer based training programs which provide customer training in the structure, operation and process programming of Applied Materials' equipment.
  • Applied Materials Israel, centered in Rehovot, has suppliers located through out the country, mainly in the northern region. Applied Materials recently unveiled a new metrology system, UVision 5, which was developed and will be produced in Israel at an estimated investment of tens of millions of dollars. The UVision 5 is a wafer inspection system for 20-nanometer technology production. The system scans the wafers at different production stages to minimize flaws, improving the final product's reliability and the efficiency of the manufacturing process.
  • In 2006 the firm began supplying equipment for photovoltaic (PV) systems, which generate electricity from solar rays.
