Highlights:

  • Applied Materials in Israel develops and produces equipment - from cell phones to personal computers and from game consuls to LCD televisions - used by leading multinationals in the manufacturing process of consumer electronic devices.
  • Applied Materials' PDC Group in Israel is the company's largest stand-alone profit center outside the U.S. and is the only international site that carries out the entire business process - from research and development to manufacturing and marketing
  • Starting with 100 employees, Applied Materials Israel now has over 1,200, most of whom are leading scientists and engineers in the fields of physics, electro-optics, algorithms, electro microscopy and mechanics.
  • 99% of the revenue of Applied Materials in Israel is from exports.
  • Applied Materials in Israel has greatly contributed to the company's overall global operations, through developing the following technologies: 
    • The award-winning UVision, the industry's first Laser 3D Brightfield Inspection Tool, which is widely used by the industry and is installed in most of the leading chip manufacturers.
    • The award-winning SEMVision G2 FIB – the world's first integrated focused ion beam used for defect analysis, detection and correction.
    • VerSEM 3D – the first CD-SEM system with 3D imaging and measurement capability which allows chipmakers to reduce costs quickly and efficiently through the early on-line detection of process excursions.
  • Applied Materials Israel is responsible for the development of a Computer Based Training programs which provide customer training in the structure, operation and process programming of Applied Materials' equipment.
  • Applied Materials Israel, centered in Rehovot, has suppliers located through out the country, mainly in the northern region.

 

Invested in Israel:

  • 1991: Applied Materials entered the Israeli market through the opening of a technology center in the country.
  • 1997: The Process Diagnostics Business (PDC) Group in Israel was launched when Applied Materials acquired 2 Israeli companies - Orbot and Opal.
  • 2001: Applied materials acquired 2 additional Israeli companies: Oramir Materials – a developer of a cleaning device for silicon wafers and Schlumberger's E-Beam inspection unit – a developer of electron-beam wafer inspection.
  • 2003: Applied Materials Ventures invested in FlexLight Networks, Inc., an optical access pioneer.
  • 2004: Applied Materials Ventures invested in M-Stream Inc., a developer of cellular phone technologies for $8 million.
  • 2006: Applied Materials Israel signs 500million NIS deal with China's SMIC to supply them systems developed and produced in Israel.

 

  • Returns:
  • In 2007 Applied Materials Israel exports reached over $476 million.
  • Due to Applied Materials Israel, the global company enjoys a 30% share in the semiconductor process diagnostics and control market.
  • Applied Materials Israel has returned the company's initial investment many times over within 10 years of business.
