Motorola: 48 Years of Technological Breakthroughs

Motorola Israel is comprised of several business groups and subsidiaries that are actively involved in developing and manufacturing its parent companys communication components, products, systems and networks, as well as marketing, selling and servicing all Motorola products. As the first multinational semiconductor company to establish itself in Israel, Motorola has enjoyed the longest presence of any major multinational investor in Israel and boasts the largest development center of any multinational in Israel. It is famous as one of the locations in which the cell phone was first developed. Today, the Israeli center is the only Motorola branch that handles development and sales for Africa.


  • 1964 - Multinational electronics corporation Motorola established Motorola Israel Ltd, the companys first wholly-owned subsidiary outside the United States.
  • 1987- Motorola South Israel Ltd. was established in Arad and became Motorola Israels principal production site and an integral part of Motorola Inc. The facility produces two-way radios, data products, modems, cellular phones, alarm and control systems and telematics products.
  • 1996 - Motorola Israel took responsibility for engineering, marketing and sales for the Eastern European and Central African markets.
  • 2000 - Motorola South Israel manufactures over one million devices per year.
  • 2003 - Motorola Israel designs and produces the Motorola Spirit - the unique and innovative fixed car phone.
  • 2004 - Motorola Israel is selected to provide a protected satellite communication system for security personnel at the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece.
  • 2007 - Motorola built its fourth R&D center in Israel, located in the north of the country, for $70 million; it employs over 200 engineers and researchers.
  • 2011 - Motorola Israel completes its move of 1,000 employees from Tel Aviv to its new premises in Airport City.
  • 2012 - Motorola Israel has 1,500 employees, including 800 engineers.

Investments and Returns

  • In 1986 Motorola launched Pelephone, Israel's first cellular operator.
  • In 1988 Beeper Communications Israel Ltd. was founded by Motorola Israel and Beeper Pagecall, a leading public paging service provider and one of Israels largest call center organizations. That same year, Motorola Israel established MIRS Communications Ltd., a provider of integrated wireless mobile communications services, serving over 320,000 subscribers.
  • In 2007 Motorola acquired Israels Terayon for $140 million and invested in Israel's Mobimate, a Blackberry information tool.
  • In 2008 Ampal-American Israel Corporation bought a one third interest in Motorola Israel for $110 million.
  • Sales in 2009 were $712 million, of which exports were $304 million.
  • By 2010, Motorola Ventures, the venture capital unit, had invested $42 million in sense through the wall solutions developer Camero Ltd., LTE metrocells developer DesignArt Networks Ltd., and driver assistance solutions developer Mobileye Inc.
  • In 2011 Taldor Computer Systems (1986) Ltd. bought out its partner Motorola Israel Ltd.Taldor bought Motorola Israel's 49% stake in the company for $7 million.
  • In 2011 Motorola Israel's radio communications products and systems generated revenue valued at $846 million, out of a worldwide total of $27 billion.
